I first discovered mountain biking back in the eighties, when I visited the Fat Tire Mountain Bike Festival in Colorado… and riding a hardtail has been a part of my daily life ever since.
The freedom mountain biking gives you, that feeling of motion, the sense of accomplishment when you reach the top of a climb and the fun on the way back down… that's what I want to share with those inner city kids who get weighed down by their concrete surroundings. So I started Trips For Kids® back in 1988 as an opportunity for them to get out of the city and see the World from a different perspective.
Six years later we established the Re-Cyclery bicycle thrift shop to provide affordable access to bikes and parts and help fund the Trips For Kids® programs. Meanwhile, we also created the Earn-A-Bike program in order to teach youngsters valuable life skills in a safe environment.
Originally based out of the San Francisco Bay area, we began supporting the development of Trips For Kids® chapters around the United States in 1999, and have since spread to Canada and Israel. Today, we have been able help over 100,000 inner city kids to reach their first summit and achieve new goals!
I feel honored to have been inducted into the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame, but the greatest honor for me is being able to work with all the staff, volunteers and children who make Trips For Kids® what it is today.
